Vietnam: Police Order Catholics to Leave Disputed Site

HANOI – Vietnamese police ordered Catholics in the capital city to leave a disputed plot of land or face possible criminal charges, Reuters reported on August 28.   Although the land is currently owned by a garment company, the Catholics erected statues and crosses on the site, claiming that the land belongs to the Catholic church.  According to the head of the district police, “Such behaviours have violated the law and show signs of breaching some articles of the Penal Code.”  A similar dispute erupted last year over land that Catholics said was wrongfully seized 50 years ago.  Such public displays of disagreement with the Communist government are rare, and religion remains under state supervision in the majority Buddhist nation.
