India: Thousands Seek Refuge as Religious Attacks Subside

ORISSA – Thousands of people, most of them Christians, have sought refuge in makeshift government camps in eastern India after a week of religious violence left 13 people dead, Reuters reported on August 29.  Hindu mobs attacked more than a dozen churches in Orissa after a Hindu leader was killed.  In the wake of the violence, about 3,000 Christians demonstrated outside the Orissa state building in New Delhi, condemning the state government’s handling of the attacks.  Archbishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar, Raphael Cheenath, rebuked the Orissa chief minster for not stopping the “ethnic cleansing of Christians.”
