South Korea: Buddhist Monk Slashes Himself in Protest

SEOUL – A Buddhist monk slashed himself in protest of what he claims is religious discrimination by South Korea’s Christian President, the AP reported on August 30.  The monk (whose injuries are not life-threatening) left a note written in blood that read, “The government of (President) Lee Myung-bak should stop oppressing Buddhism.”  Earlier in the week, at least 60,000 Buddhists, including 7,000 monks, protested Lee’s alleged religious discrimination, claiming that the President has favored Christianity over Buddhism and filled his Cabinet and other government posts with fellow Christians.  The government denies any religious discrimination.
