China: Underground Church Bishop Released by Authorities

BEIJING – Jia Zhiguo, the bishop of an unregistered Roman Catholic church in northern China, was released by authorities after being arrested on the last day of the Olympics, the AP reported on September 19. Jia Zhiguo remained under 24-hour police surveillance at his house after his release. Jia has been detained repeatedly by Chinese security forces. China broke ties with the Vatican in 1951 and requires that Catholics worship in only government sanctioned churches.
