India: Security for Karnataka Churches

KARNATAKA – Police and security guards have been deployed outside churches and prayer halls in response to continued violence against Christians in the region, the BBC reported on September 23.  More than 20 churches have been desecrated by the Hindu hardline group Bajrang Dal in the past week.  The group’s leader Mahendra Kumar, now under arrest, admitted to carrying out the attacks and claimed that they were in response to Hindus being illegally converted to Christianity.  Christian leaders have denied the charge and said that the state’s governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was inciting violence instead of calming the tense situation in the state.
