India: Modi Cleared Over Gujarat Riots

GUJARAT – A commission set up in Gujarat has exonerated Chief Minister Narendra Modi of responsibility for the religious riots in 2002, specifying that his ministers and his police were also not at fault, the BBC reported on September 25.  More than 1,000 people, most of whom were Muslim, were killed in the riots.   A 2002 train fire in the town of Godhra killed 60 Hindus triggering the riots.  The commission’s report said: “There is absolutely no evidence to show that either the chief minister or any of the ministers in his council or police officers played any role in the Godhra incident.”  This verdict has been met with strong opposition and contradicts earlier findings by the Supreme Court in India.
