Somalia: Non-Muslim Worship Centers To Be Razed

MOGADISHU – An Islamic group, al Shabab, which controls the third-largest city in Somalia, began demolishing an old Roman Catholic church in southern Somalia to replace it with a mosque, and vowed to do the same with all other non-Muslim places of worship in the region, the AP reported on September 30. Sheik Hassan Yakob Ali, a spokesman for al-Shabab, said the city’s residents had knocked down a wall of the century-old Italian church, which he claims has not been used for at least 18 years. Ali told the AP: “We have demolished a Christian church and we will replace it with an Islamic mosque. We will demolish all similar Christian cathedrals and other places of worship for Christians, Buddhists and other religions.”  Somalia is a mostly Sunni nation, and since 1991 has been controlled by rival factions and without a functioning government.
