India: Muslims Appeal to Government for Protection after Bombings

NEW DELHI – Hundreds of Islamic leaders demanded on October 14 that the government protect their community from persecution, saying Muslims were being unfairly targeted in a police crackdown after bombings across the country, Reuters reported on October 14. The government suspects that Islamic militants are responsible for the bombings.  Maulana Syed Ahmed Bukhari, the influential leader of the Jama Masjid mosque, said, “Today, with the injustice and harassment, Islam and Muslims in this country are under threat. We have been quiet for a long time, but we cannot take this anymore. We too have rights.” General elections will be held in early 2009, and attacks on Christians and suspected Islamist bombings have acted to polarize the secular government and Hindu-nationalist opposition.
