Kazakhstan: Baptist Pastor Punished for Leading Unregistered Worship

AKMOLA – Baptist pastor Andrei Blok has been punished with 150 hours of compulsory labor for refusing to pay the fines imposed on him for leading unregistered worship, Forum 18 reported on October 28. He was originally threatened with a sentence of up to four months in prison. His family told Forum 18 that “if not for many telephone calls to the court and city officials from around the world Andrei could have been put into prison for several months.” Yuliya Merkel, of the local Justice Department, told Forum 18 that Blok needs to register his church and refused to say what will happen to the church of Blok does not do so.
