Somalia: Girl Stoned to Death for Reporting Rape

MOGADISHU – A thirteen-year-old girl who was raped by three men, as reported to Amnesty International by her father, was stoned to death by more than fifty men in Kismayo, the BBC reported on November 4. When the father initially tried to report the rape of his daughter, court authorities detained her and charged her with adultery. The BBC reported that conviction of a thirteen-year-old for adultery would be illegal under Islamic law. Cameras were banned from the stoning in Kismayo, but print and radio journalists were allowed to attend. The region is nominally under the control of government forces and their Ethiopian allies; however, the port of Kismayo was seized in August 2008 by a coalition of forces loyal to rebel leader Hassan Turki, and al-Shabab, the country’s main radical Islamist insurgent organization.
