UK: Request for Church to Ban Clergy from Political Life

LONDON – The Church of England will soon be asked to ban clergy from joining the British National Party (BNP) and other such political organizations, the BBC reported on January 19. According to the Association of Chief Police Officers policy, no member of the police service may be a member of an organization whose constitution, aims or objectives contradict the general duty to promote equality. At the meeting of the Church of England’s synod next month, Vasantha Gnanadoss one of its members who also works for the Metropolitan Police, will submit a private members motion calling for a similar policy to apply to all clergy, candidates for ordination and lay persons speaking on behalf of the Church. Gnanadoss said the policy would make it more difficult for organizations like the BNP to exploit the claim that members of the Anglican clergy support them.
