Featured Opinion: Hindu Nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party Must Rethink Treatment of Religious Minorities

On May 16, official election results in India showed large gains for the governing Congress Party to the detriment of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, which held a series of informal meetings on May 17 to assess their platform strategy.  As part of this reassessment the BJP must evaluate their initial supportive response to an anti-Muslim speech by a young member, Varun Gandhi, during the campaign. Gandhi, an estranged member of the dynasty that has dominated the Congress party, is alleged to have said in a campaign speech that he would cut off the hands of any Muslim who harmed a Hindu.  The Washington Post has more.
