Iran: Cleric and Political Leader Instructs Citizens on Upcoming Vote

TEHRAN – Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s most powerful political and spiritual leader, warned voters on May 18 against supporting pro-Western candidates in next month’s presidential election, comments widely seen as supporting President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s approach to foreign policy, the Los Angelis Times reported on May 19. As the official guardian of the Islamic Republic and its political values, Khamenei plays a key role in defining the range of debate in Iran’s political establishment.   His comments coincided with an uptick in harsh criticism of Ahmadinejad’s foreign policy by candidates seeking to unseat him in the June 12 elections.
