Afghanistan: Shia Books Thrown into River by Authorities

NIMROZ – Provincial authorities in Nimroz have thrown thousands of books, mainly about Shia Muslims or Shia Islam, into a river, the BBC reported on May 26.  The Nimroz government said the books, copies of 11 titles, undermined national integrity and could fuel ethnic problems, and officials said they were acting on instructions from the ministries of culture and justice.  It is not clear whether it was simply the religious content of the books, or their Iranian origin that elicited the governmental response.
