Fiji: Military Regime Bans Christian Conference

SUVA – The Fiji military regime has ordered the Methodist Church to cancel its annual conference, the AFP reported on June 1.  A joint statement issued by the military and the police stated that the ban is due to the Church’s overt involvement in politics and the “inciteful issues” that would be discussed at its conference set for this coming August.  Earlier this month, a former Methodist Church president was detained after delivering a sermon calling for peaceful protests to restore democracy to Fiji.
