China: Government Holds Author of Human Rights Charter Without Charge

BEIJING – The lawyer for Liu Xiaobo, who has been in custody for the past six months, has said that the government no longer has any legal right to hold him, AP reported on June 9.  Liu was among more than 300 lawyers, writers, scholars and artists who signed “Charter 08” in December calling for a new constitution that would guarantee among other things, greater human rights and freedom of religion and expression.  Liu both drafted and revised the charter.
