India: Government Fails to Issue Visas for USCIRF Visit

NEW DELHI – The Indian government failed to issue the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) team visas in time for their scheduled June 12 trip to New Delhi, India Times reported on June 17.  The Hindu pontiff, Shankaracharya Jayendra Sarawati, had spoken out against USCIRF and their planned visit before the denial of the team’s visas, though the Indian government denies that the pontiff’s remarks had any bearing on the case.
