Russia: President Announces Religion Class Requirement for Schools

MOSCOW – President Medvedev has announced a pilot project in which schoolchildren will be required to either take classes in religion or secular ethics, AP reported on July 21.  Choices of religion class include, Russian Orthodoxy, Islam, Buddhism or Judaism, and it is believed that the choices have been offered to offset fears that Russian Orthodoxy would be forced on all schoolchildren.
