Ireland: President Signs Blasphemy Law

DUBLIN – President Mary McAleese signed into law a defamation bill that imposes a fine of up to $25,000 Euros for blasphemy on July 23, Reuters reported on July 23.  In response to criticism over the new defamation legislation, the government has said that to have abolished the crime of blasphemy would have required a referendum, which would have been costly and “distracting” to organize.
