Jordan: Lawmakers Reject Amendment on Law Governing Non-Muslim Communities

AMMAN – On July 29 lawmakers rejected the Senate’s endorsement of a government proposal to allow all non-Muslim organisations to operate in the country under the Societies Law, reaffirming an amendment to allow only Christian organisations to operate, the Jordan Times reported on July 30.  The House and the Senate must now hold a joint meeting to reach a definitive ruling on the proposed amendment, which was proposed in order that the law better adhere to the Constitutional provision allowing for religious practice of non-Muslim communities.
