Syria: Civil Rights Movement Freeze Governmental Changes to Personal Status Code

DAMASCUS – A draft law drawn up by the government, which was not released to the public, has been shelved after a three-month campaign by civil rights groups, MPs and religious figures against it for reversing women’s rights, secular personal liberties and religious liberty, Syria Today reported on August 10.  The draft law was set to replace the Personal Status Law of 1953, and would have applied Sharia law to both Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
