HANOI – The government announced on August 28 that it would free 5,459 prisoners, many arrested for their work in human rights and religious freedom, in an amnesty that is part of the nation’s September 2 National Day, Reuters reported on August 31.  Responding to inquiries regarding two of the nation’s best-known imprisoned dissidents, Vice Minister of Public Security Le The Tiem said neither lawyer Le Thi Cong Nhan nor Nguyen Van Ly, a dissident Catholic priest, qualified for amnesty.
