Nepal: Police Protect Indian Priests from Protestors

KATMANDU – Riot police were deployed on September 5 to protect two newly appointed Indian priests after they were dragged from Pashupatinath, Nepal’s most revered Hindu temple, and beaten by protesters who believe the positions should be held by Nepalese, AP reported on September 5. The top priests at the temple in Katmandu traditionally have come from India and have been under the protection of the King.  However, since the dissolution of the monarchy in 2008 centuries old practices have faced resistance from Nepalese citizens.
