Further Reading: The Economist on the Indonesian Government’s Response to Growing Conservatism

An article in the Economist analyses the Indonesian Government’s response both to increased Islamic religious conservatism and terrorist attacks on minority faiths.  In 2008 the Yudhoyono administration responded to pressure from Islamic parties, when it was losing support to Miss Megawati’s PDI-P, and implemented two pieces of legislation. One was ostensibly meant to curb pornography but might also be used, for example, to ban traditional dances and thus persecute minorities.  The second was a decree “freezing” the activities of the Ahmadiyah sect.
