Canada: Muslim Congress Calls on Government to Ban Burqa

TORONTO – The Muslim Canadian Congress called on the federal government to prohibit the burqa and niqab as, the organization argues, the practice of covering one’s face has no place in a society that supports gender equality, the AP reported on October 13.  The founder of the organization, Tarek Fatah, said that the proposal for the ban stems from security concerns and there is nothing in any of the primary Islamic religious texts, including the Quran, that requires women to cover their faces.
