Italy: Cardinal Criticizes Proposed Teaching of Islam in Schools

ROME – Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, the head of the Italian Catholic Church, criticized a government proposal to offer an hour on Islam in schools in an interview with Corriere della Serra newspaper, arguing: “The hour of Catholic religion (teaching) is justified by the fact that it forms part of our history and our culture,” the AFP reported on October 18.  Deputy Economic Development Minister Adolfo Urso has proposed an hour of teaching on Islam in public and private schools as a possible alternative to Catholic courses, with the intent that this would help keep young Muslim students away from fundamentalist Islamic schools.
