France: President Says Discretion Needed in Religious Practice

PARIS – President Nicolas Sarkozy announced that religious believers should practice their faith “with humble discretion” as a sign of respect for others, the AP reported on December 8.  The President’s announcement follows the referendum banning minarets on mosques in Switzerland, concerning which Sarkozy remarked that the Swiss “no” to minarets is not a bid to deny essential freedoms to Muslims but instead reflects an ebbing of a sense of belonging, and identity, in a globalised world.
