Vietnam: Buddhist Monks and Nuns Seek French Asylum

PARIS – 400 monks and nuns of a banned Buddhist group in communist Vietnam asked for asylum in France on December 18, where their leader is based, claiming that they face persecution at home, AFP reported on December 18. Earlier this month gangs wielding batons and hammers at the Phuoc Hue pagoda in central Vietnam threatened followers of the Nhat Hanh’s Buddhist tradition, where 200 of them had been sheltering since they fled the Bat Nha monastery.
