Iraq: Despite Police Protection Churches Close for Christmas

BAGHDAD – Many churches in Iraq have canceled Christmas services to protect themselves against the threat of bombings, despite the Iraqi government having stepped up security near churches and Christian neighborhoods, the Washington Post reported on December 23.  This year, with Christmas falling so close to the Shiite holiday Ashura, church officials in Baghdad and other cities say they have received warnings of attacks, forcing them to limit services to indoors and caution followers to keep family gatherings discreet.
