France: Government May Ban the Wearing of Muslim Veils

PARIS – Jean-Francois Cope, a top lawmaker from President Nicolas Sarkozy’s conservative party, preemptively filed legislation on January 12 to bar Muslim women from appearing in public wearing veils that hide their faces, the AP reported on January 12.  A panel of lawmakers has held hearings for six months on the all-encompassing veils that cover all but a woman’s eyes. It is to advise parliament by the end of January whether it believes a law banning such garments is needed.
