Iran: Government Begins Trial Against Bahai Leaders

TEHRAN – Seven leaders of Iran’s Baha’i community went on trial on January 12 accused of spying for Israel, as well as on charges of spreading propaganda against Iran and committing religious offenses, CNN reported on January 12.  The charges brought against the Baha’i leaders can carry the death penalty.  Diane Ala’i, the Baha’I International Community’s representative to the United Nations, said that it was to her understanding that no observers were allowed at the hearing, and that the lawyers for the Baha’i leaders had to argue their way into the courtroom.
