Belarus: Messianic Jew Arrested for Seeking Alternative to Military Service

MINSK – After serving a month in prison Messianic Jew Ival Mikhailov, a conscientious objector, is set to go on trial on January 29 on charges of refusing compulsory military service, Forum 18 reported on January 18.  In a similar case, Dmitry Smyk, a Jehovah’s Witness from Gomel was found guilty on the same charge in November 2009 and was ordered to pay a large fine, which he is still appealing.  A Law on Alternative Service was initially included in the 2010 Legislative Program but was removed “for some reason” at the last minute, an official of the National Centre for Legislation and Legal Research informed Forum 18.
