India: Police Kill Two Muslim Protestors

KARNATAKA – Two Muslim protestors were killed in clashes with police on March 2 during protests over an article, allegedly written by Taslima Nasreen, that challenged the Muslim practice of veil wearing, the BBC reported on March 3.  The protestors attacked two newspaper offices in Karnataka, one of which was the office of the Kannada Prabha newspaper, which carried the article.  Taslima Nasreen has denied writing the article and said that the translation into the Kannada language was “doctored” to malign her.  Nasreen fled her native Bangladesh in 1994 after receiving death threats relating to a book she had written and now lives in Sweden.
