Italy: European Court of Human Rights Accepts Crucifix Case Appeal

STRASBOURG – The Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights accepted on March 2 an appeal filed by the Italian government to a November ruling that deemed crucifixes in public schools a violation of freedom, Zenit reported on March 3.  The Italian government argued on January 28, 2009 that the crucifix is a symbol of Italian culture.  The court’s November ruling was criticized as being based on a negative understanding of religious freedom, and as overstepping the cultural and religious traditions of individual nations.
