Malaysia: Sultan Commutes Caning Sentence

KUANTAN – The Malaysian Muslim Lawyers Association has disputed Sultan of Pahang’s decision to commute the sentence of caning Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarnor, the Malaysian Insider reported on April 2.  The lawyers have argued that rights and powers of the ruler as the head of the religion in the state are contingent on him defending Islamic law and the Syariah courts.  The part-time model was sentenced to six strokes and given a fine for drinking beer at a hotel in Cherating on July 11, 2008.
