India: Hindu Caste Leaders Demand Government Amend Marriage Act

HARYANA – The heads of 20 caste councils have demanded legislation to ban marriages between members of the same sub-caste, a demand which would require that the government amend the Hindu Marriage Act, the BBC reported on April 13.  The caste leaders’ demand comes after five men were sentenced to death and one jailed for life over the 2007 murder of a young couple who married against the wishes of village elders.
