Somalia: Hizbul-Islam Insurgents Ban Radio Stations from Playing Music

MOGADISHU – Following the orders of Hizbul-Islam insurgents, most radio stations have stopped playing music on the insurgents’ charge that music is un-Islamic, the BBC reported on April 13.  Somalia has not had a functioning central government since 1991 and the Islamist militants control large parts of its territory.  The transitional government, which is backed by African Union troops and UN funds, controls only a small part of the capital, Mogadishu.
