China: Two Lawyers May Lose Licenses for Defending Falun Gong

BEIJING – Two lawyers, Tang Jitian and Liu Wei, may have their licenses permanently revoked following an administrative hearing on April 22, in which they will face charges by the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Justice of having “disrupted the order of the court and interfered with the regular litigation process” during their representation of a follower of the banned Falun Gong Spiritual movement on April 27, 2009, the NY Times reported on April 21.  The lawyers have denied the charges.  The Falun Gong movement was banned as an “evil cult” in 1999 after followers staged a silent protest at the Chinese leadership’s compound in Beijing.  Since then, practitioners have been subjected to imprisonment and torture.
