Uzbekistan: Government Begins Trial of Journalist for Religious Activity

TASHKENT – The trial of Hairulla Hamidov, a journalist arrested for Muslim religious activity, and 18 others, has begun in a building surrounded by roadblocks preventing family members, journalists and human rights defenders from attending, Forum 18 reported on May 10.  The defendants face criminal charges for religious activities, with penalties ranging from a fine of 50 times the monthly minimum salary to 15 years in jail.
