Kosovo: Student with Headscarf Barred from Attending School

DROBESH – Student Arjeta Halimi has been barred from attending school since January 2009 on the grounds that she refuses to remove her headscarf, AFP reported on May 17.  A 2009 court decision ruled that Halimi may wear her scarf to class, however the school has argued that the constitution protects the separation of religion and state, and the school’s education director Fehri Qerimi said:  “It’s a secular state, with secular schools. We follow the constitution.”
