Pakistan: Government Blocks Access to Facebook and YouTube

ISLAMABAD – A court ruled on May 19 that Facebook must be blocked due to its “growing sacrilegious content,” the BBC reported on May 20.  As an extension of this ruling, the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority announced it had ordered internet service providers to “completely shut down” YouTube and prevent Facebook from being viewed within Pakistan.  The shut downs come in response to a Facebook competition called “Everybody Draw Muhammad Day.”  Depictions of the Prophet are forbidden in Islam.
