South Africa: High Court Rules Against Bid to Ban Publication of Prophet Muhammad Cartoon

PRETORIA – A bid by South Africa’s Council of Muslim Theologians, known as Jamiatul Ulama, to ban the publication of a cartoon of the prophet Muhammad by Jonathan Shapiro was not supported by the High Court, given that the cartoon had already been placed in the public domain on the Mail and Guardian’s website, the BBC reported on May 21.  In 2006 the Jamiatul Ulama successfully stopped the republication of the Danish cartoons in South Africa’s Sunday Times.
