Egypt: Court Overrules Coptic Church on Issue of Remarriage

CAIRO – An administrative court ruled on May 29 that two Coptic men have the right to remarry, contradicting the church’s position and undermining its efforts to maintain authority over the Christian community, Reuters reported on May 30.  The ruling comes in response to an intervention by Pope Shenouda, leader of Egypt’s Copts, who launched an appeal by the church against an initial court ruling made in March 2008 that had approved the request of the two divorcees to remarry.
