China: Government Picked Rival to Dalai Lama Tours Tibet

BEIJING – Gyaltsen Norbu, the young man chosen by Beijing in 1995 to be the Panchen Lama, Tibetan Buddhism’s second-highest figure, is visiting major religious sites in Tibet, AP reported on June 8.  Norbu has taken on an increasingly political role, and was recently appointed to the main government advisory body.  Gendun Choekyi Nyima, the boy chosen by the Dalai Lama in 1995 as the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama, disappeared soon after being picked and has not been heard from since.
