Egypt: Coptic Church Urges Government to Review Marriage Ruling

CAIRO – Pope Shenuda III of Egypt’s Coptic Church on June 8 urged a high court to review its decision in May that required the church to permit Coptic Christians to remarry following divorce, which is forbidden by the church, AFP reported on June 9.  Pope Shenuda said:  “The church respects the law but it does not accept judgments that go against the Gospels and against religious freedom, which is guaranteed by the constitution.”
