Egypt: Government Drafting New Marriage Law for Minority Copts

CAIRO – Assistant Justice Minister Omar el-Sherif announced on June 14 that the department is drafting a new law to regulate marriage and divorce for the nation’s religious minorities, following an outcry over a court decision that would allow Coptic Christians to remarry, AP reported on June 14.  The Coptic Church only permits those whose spouse has committed adultery seek a divorce.  Omar el-Sherif said that the law will not encroach on the beliefs of any of the nation’s religious groups.
