Kazakhstan: Religious Communities Express Concern Over Textbook

ASTANA – Human rights activists and religious communities are concerned about the textbook Introduction to Religious Studies, which they assert contains “aggressive, sometimes insulting and even offensive” language with regards to some Kazakh religious communities, Forum 18 reported on June 18.  The textbook was introduced into schools in January 2010, and is currently the only textbook available to teach a Religious Studies course introduced for the 9th class by the Education and Science Ministry in September 2009.  Groups concerned with the content of the textbook include Ahmadi Muslims, Protestants, Hare Krishna devotees and Jehovah’s Witnesses.
